EMS can record in following formats:
1. mpeg-ts (*.ts files) – stable. Widely supported by many media players
2. FLV (Adobe file format) – stable. Supported by Adobe flash players by simply serving the files over standard HTTP or by doing VOD over RTMP
3. MP4 – beta. Supported by almost any player. Generic format.
Those are the file formats supported by the core. But there are also some technologies which are using those file formats and offers enhanced functionality:
1. HLS – based on *.ts files, it is the standard way of doing streaming for iOS
2. HDS – based on *.flv files, it is the standard way of doing adaptive streaming on PCs (using Flash)
Both are supported by EMS
It all boils down to what capabilities the player has. As long as the protocol/file format used by the target device is also supported by EMS, than the target device will work just fine:
1. iOS -> HLS and mp4 – supported
2. Android,BlackBerry -> RTSP and mp4 – supported
3. PCs -> RTSP,RTMP,HLS,HDS,ts,mp4,flv,etc – supported
4. Set-Top-Boxes -> mpegts unicast/multicast – supported. This is actually IPTV
EMS is also capable of handling multiple sources (IP cameras, streams from CDNs, IPTV cable boxes, etc) and make all of those sources available for playback simultaneously for the supported devices. While serving clients, it can also do recording
